Our Sweetheart Anniversary Celebration
On February 10th, 2008 at 6:30 p.m., we had our "Be A Sweetheart Anniversary Celebration" at the Ramada Limited Hotel in Huntington, WV. The theme of the celebration was "Celebrating Community Sweethearts" and we were recognizing some of our local supporters of the House.
Because of their continued support, the House has provided lodging, bathing, laundry, kitchen, and telephone access for more than 14,000 guests.
We would like to thank Anna Pope, the Ramada Manager and her great staff for hosting, Beulah Wise of Wise Choice Catering for a wonderful meal, and Emily Helm and Archers Flowers for decorations. Music was provided by the Cabell Midland Jazz Knights and they gave a wonderful performance. Our Invocation was provided by Dr. Allen Reasons. Tammi Stollings was in attendance representing Governor Manchin to present Dr. & Mrs. Charles Turner with a Distinguished West Virginian recognition.
Special thanks to everyone in attendance as our event was a great success.
Huntington Scenery Featured in Special 2008 Calendar!
A special 2008 calendar with pictures of well-known Huntington scenes taken by amateur photographer Linda Turner is now on sale to benefit the Jeffrey E. George Comfort House, according to Executive Director Jo Fannin.
The full-color calendars are priced at $20 each and all proceeds will go to help support the work of the “home away from home” at 2801 South Staunton Road which serves hundreds of families each year with someone who is a patient in one of seven local hospitals.
The calendar project was the idea of Mrs. Emily Helm, a full-time volunteer at the Comfort House. Copies of the original photographs selected for use in the calendar are on display in a hallway gallery at the House and the originals were auctioned off individually at various fund-raising activities during the past several years.
“A relative who was visiting here from Oregon suggested the calendar when I took him on a tour of Comfort House last summer, “said Helm, who has been a volunteer since the Comfort House opened its doors in 2000. “And I decided that if I was going to suggest it as a fund-raising project, then I would have to take the ball and run with it.”
“I’m really grateful for her efforts,” said Turner, a member of the board of directors for Comfort House. “I believe each of us on the board brings special abilities to Comfort House and I feel obligated to use mine in any way possible. I’ve been involved with photography as a hobby for 15 years. What attracts me is the play of light on objects.”
The calendars will be on sale in downtown Huntington at C. F. Reuschlein Jewelers, Inc. , 947 3rd Ave. and at Empire Books & News, 30 Pullman Square and also at the Comfort House. Persons wishing to order the calendars can also call the Comfort House at 522-1832.
Completed and dedicated Feb. 27, 2000, the facility was originally named the Hospital Hospitality House of Huntington. The name was changed earlier this year to honor Dr. Jeffrey E. George, one of the founders of the House. Dr. George is a Huntington native who moved to Roanoke, Va. this year.
The two-story house can accommodate 12 families each night and operates as a not-for-profit organization. I “We depend on fund-raising efforts such as this along with donations from businesses, clubs, churches and other organizations to maintain this much-used facility,” said Fannin.

"We begin each new day in the spirit of anticipating how we can help hurting families who are away from home," said Jo Fannin, president and CEO of the Comfort House. "We focus on the needs of our guests so they can at least find peace, comfort and refreshment from the storm of illness or injury." (Click here to see the Herald-Dispatch's Dec. 1, 2007, story.)
